A good way to get as many backlinks as you can is to try to create a contest for them. If you're scoffing at the idea, just wait till you see how well it works. This can easily be done by contacting a group of bloggers and/or webmasters asking them to put their anchor texted backlinks on your site with the knowledge that you'll deem one of them the winner late on. You may offer an ipad, or something else that will give them incentive to do so. This is like luring moths to a flame, because they're looking for backlinks too, and they have a chance to win something. Before you go to those lengths, however, determine whether you're in the right niche.
The plus point of this method is that you get control of the anchor text that goes on the contestants blogs/sites. The search engines are constantly on the look for suspicious behavior and getting a group of links at one time can cause them to give you a penalty. You never want to get accused of spamming a bunch of links everywhere. You can prevent this by limiting who competes in your contest and also choosing multiple keywords to target instead of a single one.
You may even want to use another link building technique, which is to develop some blogs on popular free blogging platforms like Blogger.com or Wordpress. What would be the purpose of this? How is it good at getting backlinks? Every blog you make with these platforms is a viable place to put your link. Not only that, but you can use anchor text in the writing that you put on those blogs, that will point back to your site using your keyword. Not only that, but the search engines seem to favor these sites and so you'll gain favor with them. Don't abuse these platforms but try to deliver value through the blogs, and the same time leverage them for your link building purposes. Once you have a network of such free blogs up and running, that's when you'll truly be taking advantage of them.
If you are just using comments to leave your links on blogs, you are seriously holding yourself back. You could write posts on other people's blogs as a guest blogger. There exist blogs that allow other people to post on them, and you only have to use the search engines to find them. Many top internet marketers are very familiar with this method, and many bloggers use it to, as it's a great way to get more eyeballs on your site and you get lots of backlinks, too. In closing, link building can take you far, but you must give yourself time to learn about it before you can see results.
